Sinopec Leads New Carbon Footprint Alliance in Energy and Chemical Sectors

China's first megaton carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project, the Qilu-Shengli Oilfield CCUS, designed to reduce carbon emission by 1 million tons per year, the equivalent of planting nearly 9 million trees and shutting down 600,000 economy cars.

This initiative, driven by eight prominent Chinese companies, including Sinopec, CNPC, and CNOOC, aims to create a comprehensive carbon footprint management system by 2027. The system will feature an improved carbon footprint calculation mechanism, propelling the energy and chemical sectors towards a low-carbon future.

Industry Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
The alliance issued a mission declaration, committing to an open platform for sharing technical expertise and cooperation. Members will work together to establish carbon footprint accounting standards for 20 key products and develop a localized product carbon footprint factor database. This initiative aims to foster international exchange and mutual standard recognition, strengthening global climate governance.

Sinopec’s Role in Green Development
Highlighting Sinopec’s contributions to global low-carbon targets, Wan Tao, Deputy General Manager of Sinopec, emphasized the company’s efforts in promoting clean fossil fuels, expanding renewable energy use, and reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing processes. Sinopec, along with alliance members, aims to enhance collaboration and resource consolidation to establish a robust carbon footprint management system.

Pioneering Carbon Footprint Accounting
Since 2015, Sinopec has led the industry in product carbon footprint accounting, evaluating nearly 100 products across 40 companies. The company plans to create a comprehensive carbon footprint management system, focusing on standards for accounting, database creation, and supply chain management. Currently, carbon footprint information modules have been completed for six pilot enterprises, with plans to extend to all enterprises.\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_column][/cs_element_layout_row][/cs_element_section][/cs_content]
