Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is making significant contributions to global efforts against climate change through its diverse construction projects. These initiatives are particularly aimed at enhancing flood control, improving drought resistance, and supporting agricultural development across various regions in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
In 2022, POWERCHINA began the construction of the La Quebrada Cansas Flood Protection Project in Peru. This initiative, actively supported by the local government, aims to protect residents along the Cansas River by improving infrastructure to prevent flooding and safeguard lives and properties. The project is a vital part of Peru's efforts to provide high-quality public services and enhance the safety and security of its citizens.
Strategic Infrastructure for Sustainable Development
POWERCHINA’s projects in Africa have also significantly improved local livelihoods. The Mellegue Dam Project in Tunisia is a prime example, where the company’s efforts have led to better flood control, enhanced farmland irrigation, and reduced flood pressure during the rainy season. This project is not only a critical water conservation hub but also a driver of ecological improvement in the region. It addresses Tunisia's seasonal drought and flood challenges, ensuring a stable water supply for irrigation and domestic use while protecting the basin’s ecology.
In Angola, the Cunene Drought Relief Project, another key initiative by POWERCHINA, has been instrumental in alleviating extreme drought conditions. By constructing 150 kilometers of water channels, the project has benefited over 200,000 residents, significantly boosting agriculture and animal husbandry in the region. The project has garnered international praise, including from Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th UN General Assembly, who commended it for enhancing the quality of life and supporting ongoing agricultural and animal husbandry training initiatives.
In Nigeria, POWERCHINA's efforts in rehabilitating and improving the Goronyo Dam and the River Training at the Middle Rima Valley Irrigation Scheme have been pivotal. The project involved repairing existing dams, constructing new flood control embankments, and dredging river channels. These improvements have strengthened the water level regulation capability in the Middle Rima River Valley, ensuring a reliable water supply for agricultural irrigation in northwest Nigeria.
Enhancing Livelihoods Across Asia
POWERCHINA’s impact extends to Asia as well, with projects like the Padma River Training Project in Bangladesh and the Achang Irrigation Development Project in Cambodia. The Padma River project, one of the world’s largest river training endeavors, involves extensive river dredging and embankment protection. This work not only ensures the safety of residents on both sides of the river but also significantly improves their quality of life.
In Cambodia, the Achang Irrigation Development Project features a comprehensive water diversion system, including a 20.5-kilometer main canal and 44.39 kilometers of branch canals. This project irrigates 10,300 hectares, enabling year-round rice cultivation and significantly elevating living standards for nearby villagers.
POWERCHINA’s Ongoing Commitment
Overall, POWERCHINA's projects worldwide have improved agricultural irrigation conditions, enhanced flood and drought resistance, and promoted local economic and social development. These efforts demonstrate the company’s capabilities in helping communities better cope with the extreme effects of climate change. By focusing on sustainable development and leveraging advanced technologies, POWERCHINA continues to play a crucial role in supporting global infrastructure and environmental resilience.
